AVG free anti-virus protection tool for Windows
April 2nd, 2006AVG Free for Windows is a free anti-virus protection tool developed by Grisoft for home use. AVG Free offers all the regular anti-virus features including on-access scanning, auto updates and scheduling. AVG is a great alternative to Clamwin (previously mentioned here) which does not do on-access scanning, however, it has more licensing restrictions (i.e can only use it for home).

Trend Micro’s Housecall is another good free anti-virus and anti-spyware program. It’s web-based and doesn’t run real-time, but in my case it found things that AVG and Lavasoft’s Adaware didn’t. A while back it used to only work with IE, but now it supports Firefox although you’ll need to have the Java Runtime installed.
