It not only imported all my Keynote files & kept them organized nicely, but also added a sort of trimmed down version of MS Outlook as a great organizer. You can also use the events API to visualize your websiteâ€™s response time how real users see it, not crawlers. You can achieve this by populating the fourth parameter (value) by the response time and then charting it using Analytics.

Just as a heads up, for #5, Google is slowly rolling out AdSense for Analytics and this hack is fairly worthless now. With the implementation from Google directly into Analytics, I can track revenue, which page an ad was clicked on, and how many clicks — all directly with just a single line of code being added (per their instructions).

By the way, this is pretty much awesome. I tried ripping the DVD without DVD43, but it said it was gonna take about 22 hours. Then, I followed this tutorial and it took less than one hour.

If Google were to publish exactly how their search algorithm worked, I wonder if their search results would be less useful. It seems like that could increase the amount of spam as people found ways to take advantage of it.

If someone wanted to create an opensource search engine the question is if anyone would use it. If the results were somehow better than Google, people would eventually switch from Google. However it seems likely that the results wouldn’t be as good as Google because of the reasons mentioned above.

It is an interesting idea though.

Luminotes is a light-weight web-based personal wiki, so you can easily make links between your notes and even optionally share your wiki with friends and colleagues. There’s a full-featured free version, too. As for portability, it’ll work anywhere you have a net connection. This won’t meet everyone’s criteria, but not being tied to a single computer or even a certain USB stick does have its benefits.

Jackie, the Handbrake GUI has been updated since I posted this solution. I used Version 0.8 Build 2.1. You can try finding that version somewhere. When I get time I hope to create an updated post using a current version of Handbrake.

I downloaded (DVD43 and) Handbreak Windows GUI but in use it doesn’t offer me the chance to enter the aspect ratio (the boxes are there but I can’t type into them, it doesn’t have a video bitrate box (has an avg bitrate box instead which I was also unable to type into - default value was 1500) and in several other respects doesn’t look like the screenshots in your instructions. I succeeded desipite these difficulties in creating a movie that I can view on my PC but it won’t sync with my iPod nano - says it isn’t compatible.

Hey Matt, thanks for stopping by. My argument is that a search algorithm is a perfect candidate for social computing. I don’t think monopolies are necessarily bad, but as a monopoly they have a level of social responsibility. Secrets are also okay. In Google’s case their lightning fast response times, huge database of indexed pages and their ability to crawl sites frequently is what gives them the competitive edge and the technology behind that can certainly remain a secret.

When you buy a computer, you want to know what components you are getting (Intel 2.6GHz), but don’t care about how the components were manufactured and patented technologies they use. Likewise, from a SEO customer perspective, it will be nice to know exactly which elements of your Web page are important and which aren’t, instead of guessing.

I totally disagree. It sounds like your defense is that their search offering is a monopoly on the web, but there’s nothing wrong with monopolies. It’s when things start hurting the consumer (or when Google uses that advantage illegally) that it becomes an anti-trust issue.

Thanks Da Vinci, I purchased software to copy DVDs to iPods (Avex DVD to iPod Converter, based on a Consumer Reports article) only to find out that it didn’t work on most DVDs. It took me a while to figure out that it’s the encryption. DVD43 is great So I agree with Bill Roy and Da Vinci, using DVD43 & Handbrake may sound like two steps vs one, but 1) at least IT WORKS and 2) you don’t feel ripped of for paying for something!

I switched from GreatNews to FeedReader a while back. FeedReader makes for a good portable RSS feed reader, but it too slows down a bit with a lot of feeds. However, I can’t bring myself to switch because of the ability to categorize things with folders and sub-folders. In addition, FeedReader has a “Archive Post” option that moves a post to a special archive folder. I prefer this over flagging posts within feeds because it means I can wipe out all contents in a folder without worrying about losing good items.

udigis, I agree with you in concept, however, in my experience not all commercial software actually works. Typically they do not have decryption built in and you end up paying $29 plus needing to install decryption software. Also, although it’s described as a 2 step process above it is only the first time and after that it’s a one step.

I agree, it’s functional but not as slick as some other apps. It does look a bit dated. And the fact that it was written in Delphi doesn’t help (even though it is open-source). But I thought it was a worth a look, and thanks for doing that.

Julio, thanks for your feedback. It’s interesting that you mention KeyNote because during my research I found a number of references to it by people that said that they still preferred it, in spite of it no longer being supported. I figured that unsupported software, or rather software that is no longer being updated or improved, will not be popular with newbies. Following your comment I decided to download and try it. I can see why it’s popular and in most ways it was what I was looking for. It doesn’t have all the features that EverNote has and it’s not as slick, but it’s very functional and has a smaller footprint. This is a good option for minimalists/purists - I wish that someone would pick up the project. Here’s how the creator described it:

“Keynote is a flexible, multi-featured tabbed notebook, based on Windows standard RichEdit control. It’s always accessible with a single keypress, even if you work in another application.

The basic idea in KeyNote is that you can have many separate notes within a single file. This means that you do not need to open several files - for most purposes it is enough to create only one file and several notes inside it. With the addition of the tree-type notes, you now have a three-dimensional notebook: many notes within one file and a multi-level, nested pages within a single note.

Optionally, KeyNote can encrypt your data securely using the Blowfish or Idea algorithms. Keynote’s interface and behavior are extremely configurable. “

Nice article. I tried NeoMem and EverNote, but wasn’t too crazy about them. Although no longer supported, I’ve yet to find a replacement for KeyNote, which is free, portable, and allows me to present information in a way I have yet to see in other note-taking applications (such as the multi-tab view). I use it every day, and have my GTD template built on it.

I run a small application that solved this problem for me (it setup the preffered editor in View Source). I performed a chech using Regedit and I noticed there was no sign of the registry keys in the registry. If it happen that you know what are the changes, it would be very nice to post them in here, together with the option Tweak UI.

UPDATE: Crimson Editor is probably my favorite text editor (I just wish it was portable), but I just found out it has an option to make it the default Internet Explorer View Source editor. Under Tools | Preferences |Tools, there's a checbox to enable Crimson Editor to be the default IE view source editor.

This is a little old news but looks like MS wants the piece of Virtual Appliance share too Here is the link to download their Visual Studio Orcas as technology preview in a Virtual Machine. And obviously you\’ll need MS Virtual PC to run this.

Since you didn’t mention it, I’ll assume you haven’t heard of a new free anti-spyware product from Grisoft. You can download it from here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5. There’s also a free web-based scan from TrendMicro. Half the time it fails to run, but it might still be worth a try.

The Grisoft product detected a trojan on my machine that Lavasoft’s AdAware didn’t.

I kind of meant “can you download the file directly?”, but I did download uTorrent (I had previously been using the BitTorrent client), and I found a little trick: I opened both clients at the same time, and tried to download the same file at the same time with both clients, and the client thought it had been seeded! I didn’t have to wait for the file to be seeded to download it!
[My main problem was waiting hours for it to be seeded, and this is only a 9kb file.] Thanks for the link!

Trend Micro’s Housecall is another good free anti-virus and anti-spyware program. It’s web-based and doesn’t run real-time, but in my case it found things that AVG and Lavasoft’s Adaware didn’t. A while back it used to only work with IE, but now it supports Firefox although you’ll need to have the Java Runtime installed.
